The Life of a Roman Soldier
Have you watched the movie "Gladiator" and wondered about how the Roman legions operated? Have you ever wondered how the phrase "to cross the Rubicon" came to mean you were committed to an action? Have you seen a documentary on Hadrian's Wall in Britain, seen the Roman Legion re-enactors and thought "I wish I knew what they thought about being stationed so far from home? Then this class may help. The average Roman solder, be he Italian or from one of the conquered territories, have a great deal to tell us about what life was like for the troops of Rome. And their lives are fascinating. Do you know why Roman soldiers drank a mixture of vinegar and water or why Francis Marion, a hero of the American Revolution, did so too? Spoiler Alert: It's not because they found it delicious. I will be presenting an overview of the typical life of a Roman soldier from the late Republic through the middle of the imperial period.

Google Apps for the SCA
So many things are online right now and while we are medieval (or at least pre-1600ish) the tools that are offered on platforms such as Google can be a very real help to those who are trying to be efficient. Whether organizing events or research, there are lots of ways that these apps can be of use in the SCA. We will take a look at how the apps work with each other and how to use them. There will be plenty of time for questions as well! Not familiar with Google apps (such as Keep, Docs, Sheets, Jamboard, etc.,?) no problem! Have a general idea of how they work but want some more info, welcome! Excited to offer this way of helping folks organize information! |

Charny Asks, Who Gets the Horse?
Geoffroi de Charny wrote a treatise asking over 130 questions concerning the joust, tournaments, and war -- mostly about war. The nature of the questions highlight that being a man-at-arms was a profession with its own problems concerning pay and status. But it also address issues of personal honor that are pertinent to the SCA today. The instructor will provide a broad overview of the questions and then there will be a discussion of a few particular ones, particularly the famous one associated with "he who does more is worth more." "Gawain and the Green Knight": A Scholarly Rant
This class has everything: symbolism, literary themes, Morgan le Fay! Ela will discuss the poem’s history, narrative, spiritual and mythological influences, cultural inferences (especially regarding color, clothing, and hunting culture!), and of course, its connection to wider Arthuriana and medieval literature as a whole. Warning: 600+ year spoilers!

First impressions. Women printers in the 1500s.
In much of Europe women in the 1500s were as engaged in printing as their husbands, fathers, and sons and often came to be in charge of the print shop. Come and learn about the first known instance of women printers, the Italian Nuns of San Jacopo di Ripoli (printing from 1476-1484), the first well-known female printer, Charlotte Guillard (French, printing from 1502-1557), and Jacquinetta Vautrolier who printed her first book in England in 1581 whilst her husband was away and then had to fight the Stationer’s Guild for the right to publish after his death, as well as countless* others. I will have examples of their published works that still exist, and also attempt to situate them within the broader context of their times.
*To be fair, I won’t actually be discussing all of them as over 100 women have been documented in England from 1550-1650).

The Life of Aquinas
Thomas Aquinas (1225 – 1274) was arguably the most influential philosopher and theologian of the European Middle Ages. His considerable volume of works fused together Aristotelian philosophy and Catholic theology into an original synthesis that has influenced thinkers down into the modern era. This class however will not be about philosophy as such, instead we will look at Aquinas as an archetype of the medieval scholar. He lived and thrived in the early era of the medieval universities, as well as being an early member of the Dominican mendicant order. Consequently, we will focus on those aspects of his biography relevant to development of a persona who moved in the intellectual circles of the High Middle Ages. |

Anglo Saxon Melting Pot
[an Art History for Scribes class]
The manuscript art of the Early Medieval Britons was truly that of a culture formed by migration, assimilation, and synthesis.
In this class we'll begin to explore the regional differences across the island; trace its gradual evolution as local styles were influenced by and combined with art from across the Channel and beyond; and delve into how—and why—these manuscripts build a stylistic bridge between the Late Iron Age and the Medieval British world.
By the end, I hope you'll have a finer understanding of Anglo Saxon manuscript art, as well as the cultural mergers the period represents, so that when it comes time to create an Early Medieval British scroll...you'll be ready.

Manipulating the Middle Ages: Racism, Nationalism, Ethnocentrism, and the Society
What do racism, nationalism, ethnocentrism, and misogyny have in common? It's the Middle Ages. Throughout modern history, individuals have sought to reinterpret the Middle Ages in order to justify these things and much more. How can this happen? Aren't facts just facts? Why does interpretation matter? As it so happens, popular media, politicians, and historians have throughout time repurposed, invented, and manipulated the Middle Ages by highlighting certain facts and downplaying or ignoring others. We within the Soceity also interpret and reinterpret various elements from this period in history. It is vital to the future of the Soceity to discuss how and why we do this in contrast and comparsion to other organizations. This class will discuss two texts in conjunction: _The Devil's Historians_ by Kaufman and Sturtevant and _Inventing the Middle Ages_ by Norman Cantor. Students need not have read these books but they will provide the framework for discussion. |

Archaeological ‘evidence’ will be introduced to ‘clarify and verify’. Maps and text will be presented to give context and add some ‘pretties’.

Dukes & Duchesses, Knights & Barons, and What on Earth is a Marquess?!
From the moment of its inception, the Society for Creative Anachronism has strived to authentically recreate the arts, sciences, combat, and courtesy of various times all long gone by. In this pursuit, a vast array of pageantry has emerged across the Known World - with a sea of royals and nobles in pointy hats presiding over it all. But have you ever stopped to think why a knight would stand before one baron and behind another? Or why a master artisan holds a higher station than someone with a coronet on their head? In this class, we will explore the social structures of surrounding the nobility of the European Medieval and Renaissance eras, its counterparts in the Society, and how the two evolved into the modern systems we have today to honor those bygone times. This class will be recorded. |
