SCA Geography
You have heard that the SCA is in Antarctica, but what kingdom is that? Just where are the Estrella War, the Barony of Southron Gaard, or Kingdom of Ealdormere on a map? If an event is in the Canton of Aire Faucon, how far is the drive? This class will answer those questions and more! Starting at the map of the world, we will look at where the different kingdoms are then zoomed in on North America, the east coast, and finally Atlantia itself, locating the different branches around the country, and around the kingdom, on a modern map. |

Organizing Performing Arts in the SCA for Performers and Event Staff
This class is for both performers and the event staff that wants to work with them. When event staff wants to get music, dance, shtick, or other performing arts into their event, there are steps you can take to ensure the final performance is what you want. When performers want time and space from event staff to enjoy their art at SCA events, there are steps you can take to ensure the final performance is what you want and also serves the event. I’ve performed music, dance, theater, and misc schtick for 26+ years. Performers of all levels can serve kings, autocrats, the populace, and the SCA mission as well as their own artistic calling with a few precautions. |

The Two Sword Solo Rules of Domingo Godinho
"Before La Veradera Destreza became the official fencing system of Spain, another system held sway. Domingo Godinho’s text, the only known surviving complete text of his tradition, contains information on the use of the Montante, single sword with companion weapons, techniques against treachery, and two swords. In this class, students will learn the solo forms or rules of using two swords to fend off multiple opponents in narrow alleyways, surrounded in a crossroads, and having to defend a woman. These drills provide a
basis for improvisation in cutting patterns and coordinating two longer weapons in each hand and also introduce movement patterns and drills to develop one’s agility. Students will need two roughly equal lengthed swords or sword simulators. There will be no partner work, only solo drilling." |

SCA Persona Development
"Whether this is your first event or you remember when there were just two Kingdoms, every good gentle can continue to build or develop their personas!
The idea of this class is to consider the ways in which you can become a more authentic version of the medieval you. We will explore ways to improve your representation of material culture, consider how a medieval version of yourself might have viewed the world, and learn ways to validate and authenticate your sources.
Additionally, with the expansion of the SCA's allowed regions, resources will be available to consider exploring non-Western personas (and navigate ways in which to do so gracefully)."
If you happen to have source books for your persona or others, please bring them! We can look at them as time allows. |

Advanced Concepts and Haupstucke in the Liechtenauer Tradition
With the growth of cut and thrust and the longsword in our society, many have begun studying the tradition of Johannes Liechtenauer. Many have begun using his hidden hews and guards in their fencing. In this class, students will build on the basic techniques of Liechtenauer and learn the philosophical and technical core of the art including the use of fuhlen or feeling, indes, durchwechseln, sprechfenster, nachreisen, and ansetzen. Different footwork will also be discussed and students will learn how to go with the left and strike with the right as our sources state to deliver a powerful attack from the pre-fencing. It is highly recommended that students have some basic familiarity with the Liechtenauer system such as the basic hidden hews and guards/leger to get the most from this class but it is not required. A longsword feder or blunt is required a long with mask and C&T gear for slow partner drilling. |

Dance like the Valois: Improvised Dances for the music of the French Renaissance Guitar
No experience necessary! Many of these are simple dances we rarely do because they were either improvised or the exact steps are unknown. Come dance, play, listen, or all three! This class will focus on the dance music of the late period French Renaissance Guitar composers Adrian Le Roy and Guillaume Morlaye and their corresponding forms of dance in the 1589 French manual, Orchesographie. We'll cover the pavan, galliards, various bransles, branles gay, and--if we have time--tourdion. Johann will introduce and perform the music. Wenllyan will lead the dances. Come join us as we visit a time when the guitar rivaled (or surpassed) the lute in popularity in Renaissance France, and we dance to music composed for the instrument by the most famous guitarists of the day. |

Applying Fiore's Combat system to SCA Combat Forms
Fiore di Liberi describes a system of combat for the late 1300s. Published in 1409, his manuscripts discuss a consistent set of combat principles which he applies to wrestling, dagger, swords, axes and spears. It has application to armored, rapier, cut and thrust, and even mounted combat within the SCA.
This course will examine the core skills and techniques that span the entire system and discuss approaches to applying those skills to SCA combat forms. Representative plays from the dagger, longsword and combat-in-armor sections will be examined for commonalities - both mental and physical. Techniques to apply and drill these commonalities for use on an SCA combat field will be examined. |

An participatory walk through the basic sequences of dagger attacks as presented in Getty Ludwig
Ms. Ludwig XV 13, better known as the Flower of Battle (il fior di battaglia) by Fiore Dei Liberi, a

been selected to exemplify the teaching structure of the manuscript. Participants should expect to
move around but, as this is a technique and mechanics class, there will be no striking at speed or sparring. Dagger simulators will be available as loaners for the class.
NOTE: Actions to be practiced will be done slowly and with control. Actions at speed are not
allowed; anyone trying to do so will be ejected from the class. Dagger simulators will be available as loaners for the class. Ages 16+ please |

On The Just Shaping of Letters
This is a class for anyone who has had trouble learning how to shape a new calligraphic hand. It covers how to look at any alphabet and figure out how to shape it so that it looks like, i.e. has the same weight and feel, as the hand one is trying to copy. Various hands are discussed. The Roman carved into the Trajan Column is used as a model for understanding how the alphabet fits together.
What to bring:
• Bring calligraphy pens and paper for taking calligraphic notes. You don’t need the “good†paper, but there will be some calligraphy involved.
• Sample of hands that one might wish to learn. |

The SCA is a subculture with rules and customs that can seem complex, even impenetrable, at first glance. It’s really a lot simpler than it looks. Let’s demystify the titles, the regalia, and the etiquette that’s peculiar to the SCA and to Atlantia and try to make everyone more confident and comfortable in our Society. Particularly intended for newcomers, but not limited to them! |

Carving Tools, Materials and Techniques and how they are Alike and Not
This class will be discussing hand carving tools and how different materials respond to them.
While many of the carving tools in period may look alike, the materials they are used on react far differently from eachother. Proper technique, tools and an understanding of your material will help you move fluently from one material to another. We will be looking at wood, bone, horn, ivories (both vegetable and mammal). We will also discuss other materials such as soapstone, amber, jet and sandstone.
Materials will be on hand so you can see what actually happens to the material as the instructor is explaining the different techniques. Because of the shortage of tools and materials, most of the class will be observation and discussion only. The instructor will have some materials and tools available for you to try your hand at in order to appreciate the uniqueness of the material. We will have samples of carved pieces in different materials by the instructor, as well.
If you are looking at getting into carving in the near or far future, then this class is the perfect primer to help you choose the proper tools, materials and be able to approach it with some understanding of how the two will work together in your hands.
Lord Valdis of Gotland is an accomplished carver, currently specializing in horn, bone and ivories. With over 30 years of wood working experience and almost 20 years working with horn, bone, ivory, amber, jet and stone. Valdis has an in depth understanding of how each material reacts to tools and the experience of a self taught carver that made many mistakes in tool purchases, usage and techniques. Take this rare opportunity to learn as Valdis walks through each material and their characteristics and the hand tools that turn your lump of raw material into a work of art. |

Conflict Resolution 101
Learn proven methods of resolving conflict between two people, both as a participant and a mediator. You will be able to take home two simple processes that can be used to facilitate a conversation between two people intending to clear up a conflict. Examples will be given and at least one practice conversation will be done during class. Methods based on the “Clearing Model†from Woman Within International with additional material from the book Crucial Conversations. The new SCA Anti-Bullying Policy has brought to light the importance of resolving conflicts ourselves before harsh consequences result. SCA members, officers, and leaders of all kinds can benefit from using these methods.
I learned these techniques from over 20 years working as a volunteer officer and participant in the Woman Within program (www.womanwithin.org) and close ties with the ManKind Project program (www.mkp.org). |

Justice by Blood and Iron - The History and Legal Process of Trial by Combat
For centuries various European societies resolved some of their greatest legal disputes through a procedure where two people tried to slaughter each other. In the process of answering this question we’ll look at the various techniques and legal practices that marked these trials, specific cases which were resolved by combat, and the lasting legacy of this practice on our own system of justice. |
