This class will define skillfulness as understood by cutting edge researchers in the field of skill development. Students will learn how to evaluate skillfulness in themselves and others according to established and consistent metrics. This applies to *anything* at which anyone might want to become skillful. A quick introduction to Spanish women's clothing of the late 15th and early 16th centuries. We will discuss basic layers, embellishments, accessories, fabrics, and colors.

The Shire of Roxbury Mill has grown from 5 to 65 active members playing with the group in 3 years -- from a non-entity to a well-known regional influence. In this course, the Seneschal of The Shire of Roxbury Mill will explain her methods for participation and retention that led to this growth, and use the lens of social gaming theory to help you avoid some of the most common pitfalls that local groups fall into that either dissuade new membership, or that discourage play with the local group. Looking for ways to improve the way you write about your work? Not getting a lot of feedback about how things might be communicated more successfully to readers/judges? Does the feedback you get seem to miss what are, to you, seemingly obvious explanations? In this class, we'll talk through a range of strategies that are likely to result in stronger writing and clearer presentation of your research, from identifying different audience needs to providing accessible structure to sourcing up-to-date information. While the primary focus is on documentation meant to accompany entries for competitions and displays, we'll also spend a little time discussing other means of presentation (e.g. progress blogs/diaries). I will not be recording the class session.

Ready to burn off some energy in a period way!? We will actively do dances that kids as young as 4 can learn and do! Modifications will be made so they can either be done solo or with a parent/sibling as a partner. Dances include Horses Bransle, Maltese Bransle, Washerwoman's bransle. Please have a space at least 3ft by 6ft available to dance in. Possible places are the kitchen, living room, entry way, hallway, or even outside on the driveway or yard (as long as its level). While many may be familiar with magic and swordplay in a fantasy context or in the symbolic use of sword and knives in modern Western esoteric traditions, fewer know of the emphasis on these practices in Western manuscripts of historical swordplay and in the esoteric practices of Japanese koryu (old school) martial arts. In this class, students will receive a survey of literature on this topic. Discussed will be symbolism in images from Achille Marozzo's Opera Nova, the magical sections of Ms.3227a ("the Nuremburg Hausbuch") and the esoteric practices of koryu arts in Japan. Students will learn how these traditions relate to the religious, esoteric, and cultural contexts of the time and get a glimpse of how martial artists viewed practices one would consider magical. This class will be on Zoom and will not be recorded.

We will go over a number of ballads from the University of California-Santa Barabara’s English Broadside Ballad Archives and their tale types and variants. Discussions will include murder ballads and folklore influence. This class will not be recorded.

This is a two-hour class divided into two parts co-taught by Magistra Letia Thistelthueyt and Mistress Merwenna de Rannowe. The first session will have students review and practice cross-hatching and shading methods seen in period sources of illustrative printing (think Albrecht Durer!). Each student will be provided a design that they can print and draw on from home during the class. The second part of the class will be taking that design and using it to create a simple scribal volvelle, or wheel chart - a paper construction used throughout SCA period consisting of layers of rotating discs with information and designs on them. At the end of the class, you’ll have a fully functional volvelle that you can complete on your own, as well as the design template to make more spinny fun times. Students will be emailed a template to print prior to the class from which they will draw out, measure, and cut their volvelle during class. Just print and have your paper ready to go - no need to start until the class begins. Students will also need to have a pen (any type, dip pen or otherwise), scissors/cutting implement, about 6” of thread, a needle, and glue or tape that works with paper. Optional supplies: Small bead for embellishment! This class will not be recorded.

In this class we'll talk about all the various elements that go into 14th Century dress and how you can get that 14th Century look. From hats, to hairstyles , to gowns, sleeves, tippets, hoods, belts,embellishments and more. Become that 14th century fashion plate you have always wanted to be. This is mainly a discussion class, however will walk through some basic patterns that will be shared via the presentation and also emailed to those interested.

Known Andean Textile history begins with basketry in 8000BC. This region didn't just develop textiles early in their history, textiles were the primary development on which civilization was based. The Inca are the only civilizations classified as such without a typical written language; instead they had a "writing" system based entirely in fiber. This class will begin exploring the extant material culture from the Andean region, including museum textiles, applicable recorded histories, and period drawings and paintings. I am going to attempt to introduce every broad type of textile art performed in this region, including spinning, cord making, looped techniques, weaving, and feather work. I will also present information on the fibers used in the region, which are among the finest in the world, and the tools used to work them. I have done my most in depth research on weaving, so this section will be the most well developed (and trust me, it's not quite like anywhere else in the world). The purpose of this class is to bring as many examples from this unique tradition to the attention of as many people as possible. I plan on offering a more focused class on the principles of Andean weaving later on. Come prepared for a visual feast; maybe you'll fall in love and find your next project along the way.

Conducting ethical research and documentation for the arts and sciences in the SCA need not be difficult. This class will walk attendees through research methods, style guides, and producing documentation with a focus on ethical sourcing. After completing the class, students should have a grasp of how to research projects on their own and create comprehensive documentation for education and competition. The experience of childbirth is an almost universal female experience. This class examines that experience from the viewpoint of a Tudor royal female who was subject to the Ordinances for a Royal Birth written by Henry VII's mother, Margaret Beaufort. The Ordinances were exhaustive in their scope and coverage and are fascinating to read on their own. When combined with actual human experiences of birth undertaken pursuant to their requirements, they take on new importance.

Content Warning: This class will contain discussion of killing, the mindset of those who killed and how this was coped with and accomplished, and the symptoms of what today might be described as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. While PTSD is a modern term, the symptoms and illness of it are far more ancient. While even modern listeners have heard of old terms like shell shock, battle fatigue, and in some cases soldier's heart or nostalgia, we find even in medieval and other period sources references to how one develops the mindset to commit the traumatic act of killing another human being and the aftermath that results. Students will learn examples from Shakespeare, the Anonimo Bolognese, accounts from Chivalric texts, and Japanese koryu arts and drama which put into perspective the period conception of violence and killing and how an individual coped with taking a life through their martial, social, and religious-spiritual practices. This class will be on Zoom and will not be recorded.

This is a how to write poetry class that also includes information on the Old Norse culture as it relates to poetry. The basic forms covered include fornyrdislag, malahattr, ljodahattr and kviduhattr. I will try to record the class.

A survey of the nature of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight with attention paid to its unusual poetic form, and considerations of its mysterious authorship, and the complex systems of violence, seduction, magic, and trials that underlie its structure, and make it the greatest English poem of the 14th Century! Medieval Islamic bookbinding differs than European bookbinding of the same period. The fore-edge and envelope flaps are the most noticeable difference from other binding styles, but the most major variations are in the structure of the binding. Islamic bookbinding is very easy to learn (as bookbinding goes) and no previous skill or knowledge is required. This is the first class in a 3 class series on making a book in the Islamic style. These classes are intended as demonstrations of the steps necessary and not a follow-along workshop due to glue-drying time. This class covers the preparation of the textblock from cutting and folding the paper through gluing the spine. The second class covers sewing the endbands. The third class finishes the book. Class will be hosted on Google Meet (appears to require a google account). Come learn about the history and...somewhat muddled...origins of German Brick Stitch! This will be a survey of Brick Stitch; both as a stand alone stitch and the well known style German Brick Stitch. Learn more about the mechanics of singing and projection, inhabiting a character, reading an audience, and more. This class is more suited to persons with some experience in performance rather than pure beginners.

This class discusses why one should have a website to show and share their A&S work. One excellent method for building a website, WordPress, is demonstrated. Methods, tips, and pitfalls for photography of your work is covered as well. The class will not be recorded.

This class will give students an underlying theory, as well as models and organizers to better document original text. Original writing in the SCA exists on a middle ground between historical recreation and modern sensibility, and this class will cover some of the challenges of documenting original text, and provide solutions that make documentation engaging and supportive of our art. Will this class, your audience will be excited to read your documentation, and will understand why your imagery is actually a careful match to period exemplars! Learn Gracca Amorosa that my students lovingly call the 'no touchy' dance. Only twice in the entire dance do you lightly touch your partner and we can modify that to be just a reverence. No partner needed! Please plan to have 4ft by 6ft area to be able to dance in. Not all scrolls need to have Illumination or Calligraphy. A presentation of pen and ink, woodcuts, etchings, engravings, and drawings that could be converted to scrolls. A presentation of exemplar hands that can be used instead of Calligraphy. This class will not be recorded.

A brief history of remarkable women who chose to rebel against the norm and pave their own way. I will record this class for anyone that is not able to attend.

This class addresses specific considerations for female (and individuals who identify as female) armored fighters for melee fighting based on the results of an informal survey of women armored fighters conducted in August of 2019. Male fighters will find the discussion useful as well! The course will go over the following: 1. Data collected on 80 female armored fighters across the Known World. 2. Which weapon form is the right choice female armored melee fighters 3. How to practice melee fighting 4. Ways to make the melee fighting experience more enjoyable 5. Overcoming roadblocks in melee fighting unique to female armored fighters 6. Commanding the unit (unleashing your inner Joan of Arc) By the end of the session, students will have gained real-life examples that they can incorporate into their training and battles. No materials necessary. This class will be recorded and made available to students upon request.

This class will serve as an introduction to the family Sagas of Iceland. It will include important historical and cultural information drawn from archeological finds. A limited amount of literary analysis of the sagas will be given. If there is a particular topic that you are interested in seeing in the lecture, please contact me through email and I will do my best to cover those topics. This class will not be recorded.

We’ll discuss definitions, time periods, and the and introductory survey of the types of sources we may call upon in our journey towards a goal of more accurate, and specific, clothing and accessories. Not so much a “how to” make the clothes, as a foundation for further study. Gregorian Chant was the basis for all Western European Music. This class explores it’s origins, characteristics, and context in relation to the medieval mindset and liturgical use. This class also examines the structure, symbols, neumes, and rhythmical indicators in chant notation. This class will not be recorded.

This is one of the two required classes to become a warranted MOL. This class teaches how to run both elimination and non-elimination tourneys.

The Perniö headpiece ca. 1150 is comprised of an 8 strand braid and bronze coils. The original and reconstruction are on display in the National Museum of Finland. In this class you get to learn from my braiding struggles. You will learn how to construct the braid, and see the design of a tool I've engineered to make this braiding easy-peasy. This will be a live class on the Google Meet platform, and also recorded for future reference. If you wish to participate in the braiding portion please have 4x 1 yard long strands of yarn; any fiber type will work for learning but the thicker yarn is easier to use and see. Also, 1x 12 inch piece of yarn and something stationary to tie on to (c-clamp, table leg, safety pin to your pants, lamp... Almost anything will work).

The Mammen stitch is a very common variant of nalbinding used from Egypt to Scandinavia. This class will give you a hands on introduction to the technique. We will cover starting, pivoting into the spiral, connecting to the previous row, and increases/decreases. Students will need to have a light color worsted weight yarn, preferably wool, single ply or tightly plied, and a needle. A number 13 tapestry needle or darning needle works great. This class will look at the chemistry of various period pigment groups and why they do not work the same as modern pigments, discussing methods for overcoming the differences. $5 for handout (optional) $20 for take-home pallet (optional)

We'll discuss a few of the more famous female physicians with a focus on those who studied at the Schola Medica Salernitana. The "Ladies of Salerno" consisted of Trota of Salerno, Abella, Constance Calenda, and Rebecca Guarna. We will include Hildegard of Bingen, Anna Komnene, and others as time allows. A basic understanding of the humoral theory is recommended but not required.

This class will cover some of the solo drills recommended in Meyer's treatise for training with a dussack. I'd recommend students bring a dussack trainer if possible, although a roughly 30" dowel rod would make a decent substitute.

Try your hand at German Brick Stitch, a counted satin stitch style from 13th-15th century Lower Saxony and Westphalia. Students will leave with an understanding of stitch mechanics, a brief history of the style, and the beginnings a bookmark or cup cover. The first half of this class will be a lecture, which will be recorded. Second half is for working on the embroidery. This working time will be spent answering questions and looking at anyone's work who has a webcam and wanting help.* *Class limit has been changed. While I normally limit the class to 10 people in order to give 1-on-1 attention, that will be difficult to do virtually. So, in hopes that everyone can learn from the questions and work of others, this class has been opened to the limit of the platform. Please note that if you would like to show your work in order to get better answers to your question, a webcam will be needed. Due to the meeting being held on the free version of Google Meet, you will need to have a Gmail account in order to join the class. Materials Suggested: For practice: - Plastic canvas, size 5 to 7 squares per inch and matching size needle. For cup cover/bookmark: - A small to medium sized hoop - A tapestry needle, sized appropriately for fabric count - Ground cloth of your choice, cut to 8in x 8in square. Size 28ct or 32ct cotton recommended for beginners, linen for those comfortable with it. Aida isn't recommended, but it can work in a pinch. - DMC Embroidery floss in 2-3 colors.

Exchequer 101 is required for being a warranted exchequer and deputy exchequer. This course covers the documentation needed to get started as an exchequer, what is required to hold the office and the rules and responsibilities of the office. This class is also open to anyone interested in becoming an exchequer or seneschals who want exchequer training.

During plague in history, the theaters in London were closed. Lucky for us, the internet allows us many ways to keep performing arts alive! I can offer some "Best Practices" and caveats for moving your in-person experiences to online AND offer technical advice on how to run Zoom, Google Hangouts, and other online collaboration software. ***This class will be recorded! Part two in a series of three planned classes (part 1 not required) This class includes two parts. The first portion is intended as an introduction to Viking Age Norse “animal ornament” found especially in jewelry. In the second portion we will focus on the Oval Brooches that feature prominently in Viking Age Norse feminine clothing. We will look at some of the major styles, and try to put them into a general chronology and regional context. As a professional writing tutor, Lady Ela is familiar with the practical techniques and interpersonal skills that create a positive, supportive environment for optimal growth. Done well, the critiquing process can help both the giver and receiver grow in their fields. We will cover techniques for initiating feedback kindly, pedagogical practices that support the recipient, and important differences between oral and written feedback.

An overview the known varieties of unleavened breads found in Pompeii and Herculean after the eruption of Vesuvius in 79CE. History, ingredients, and techniques of making and baking. This lecture style class will take us through how dances are reconstructed from the dance manual, interpretations, reconstructions, teaching, and performing. I will use Gathering Peascods as the example dance since many in Atlantia are familiar. This lecture will be recorded.

This is a discussion of my experiments in creating my own pigments, using methods discussed in Cenninni's Libro dell'Arte and other sources. Methods will be demonstrated.

This class reviews the various surviving manuals describing combat technique from Europe during the SCA period. We'll then discuss how these manuals are studied within the arts & sciences discipline of Historic Martial Arts and how they can be adapted for use on the SCA combat fields. Several historic plays will be examined via translated text and then demonstrated via pre-recorded YouTube videos.

This class will act as an introduction to the characters, concepts, and plot of _Beowulf_. All interest levels are welcome and the course of lecture/discussion will revolve around the needs of those attending. Learn how the social and physical differences (and similarities) between men and women affect their learning styles for SCA combat. In this class, we will explore getting each student started Knitting. We will use a Knitted Cast on, perform the knit stitch, the purl stitch, and bind off (knitwise). The first hour will be a very short, basic history, Casting on, working the knit stitch, and beginning the purl stitch, followed by a brief break, then the purl stitch and binding off knit-wise. Through an abundance of caution, I have scheduled two hours..your mileage may vary Please be prepared with a skein of light colored, worsted weight yarn (#4 on the label where applicable), and a pair of #7, 8, or 9 knitting needles. Opus Anglicanum is often considered the pinnacle of medieval English embroidery. During this class, we will take a closer look at what defines this style of embroidery, its fascinating history, and review the materials used. Special focus will be given to the metallic embroidery as seen in the shimmering gold backgrounds, and sometimes figures, of Opus Anglicanum. Lecture only.

This class will cover tips and tricks for being the MOL-IC, or just being an MOL at a larger event (like Ruby Joust), or at a War such as War of the Wings and Pennsic.

This class will take you on a tour through the art literature, armor, chronicles, and a commentators of the time to dig at the deeper meanings behind the revolutionary fashion changes of the latter half of the 14th century. So, grab your tightest hose and join the journey back to the birth of fashion. (This class will not be recorded.)

Alliteration is more than just tongue twisters, look at some of the great writers in period like Shakespeare, or Anglo-Saxon poetry, or even songs. Alliteration is a useful sound device that adds calm to a poem or draws attention to a phrase spoken or enhances the catchy cadence of a song. In this course, we will look at the many forms of alliteration and even write some of our own. May we join together merrily to explore some of the aspects of alliteration.
