Although many of us think of necromancy as purely in the realm of fantasy, there was a historical practice of necromancy that was prominent in Europe throughout the high middle ages and renaissance. In this class we will talk about the historical practice of necromancy , who necromancers were in period , what historical necromancers believed they could accomplish and what textual evidence we have for necromancy in the fifteenth century. Also , maybe you’ll learn how to raise the dead. This class will not be recorded.

In the first half of this class we will cover extant pieces of stamped fabric and text evidence of how these textiles were used during the fourteenth century in Europe. This will be followed by a practical "how to" and lessons learned.

This class will cover the basics about the chemistry involved in the creation, absorption and breakdown of alcohol and the fermenting processes. Malting, and hops are covered as well, and the breakdown of various sugars used to make mead, wine and beer. This will not be recorded but the presentation deck will be available.

A class to review the 2019 A&S judging rubric for contest entrants, and those who might be willing to perform the service of judging entries. Get past the negative connotations of "judgment" and think about objective assessment and the path to A&S enlightenment. This class could be useful to anyone wishing to understand how those who judge A&S contests try to evaluate an entry without bias. After the instructor presentation, there will be time for questions and discussion.

Magic in medieval Europe was primarily a service industry, used in all areas of life, from healing the sick to finding a companion and prevailing in law suits. Medieval magic practices developed from a combination of local traditions and Greco-Roman practices. But from where did the Greeks and the Romans derive their magic traditions? The Romans said they got their magic from the Greeks and the Greeks claimed it was from the Babylonians and the Persians, but both those cultures admitted they had learned from the Egyptians. This class will introduce you to Egyptian magical practices and traditions so you can see from where European practices came. I will not be recording this class.

A class to explain why A&S displays and contests ask for documentation, what those who read the documentation are looking for, and how to create a good piece of documentation without going crazy. The demands of a small challenge at a local event can be very different from a kingdom-level competition. Nonetheless, it is important to let all who see your entry have an appropriate amount of information by which to understand it. After the instructor's remarks, time will be allowed for questions and discussion.

A linguistic history of Britain from the Celtic languages to the language reforms of the neoclassical era. This class will not be recorded, but a pdf handout will be available for download.

I will be explaining the purpose of pancake day in the UK, where it came from, historical significance and points of interest and track the practice of it in modern day. I do not plan to record this class.

This is an examination of 4 key notable women during the Anglo-Saxon period of England (450 -1100 CE) and how changes in the structure of secular laws and Church organization influenced their success.

This class will start with a quick overview of women's fashion in the later 16c Spain, the defining characteristics of Spanish women's clothing and how some of those characteristics show up in the various vasquina (kirtle) patterns in Juan de Alcega's 'Libro de Geometria, Pratica, y Traca,' published in 1580 and 1589. The focus of this class will be demonstrating a skirt draft based on the ankle-length vasquina pattern (f.71v in 1580; f.60 in 1589), and briefly discussing how this technique could be modified for Alcega's other skirt patterns. My pattern draft utilizes generalized measurements for the waist and skirt length, so can be tailored for individual needs. Anyone wanting to draft along with me needs: - A string/straightedge/measuring tape the total length of your waist measurement plus desired skirt length. - Two pieces of paper (or other surfaces), each the length of your string (above) and the width of your waist measure, plus a couple extra inches each dimension. - Pencil, pen or surface-appropriate marking implement - Straight-edge (optional) My skirt drafts will be at 1/2.54 scale, by taking my measurements in inches and then using those measurements in centimeters, without converting units (ie, 30" waist becomes 30 cm, 40" length becomes 40 cm). A basic overview of policy and best practices regarding the duties of webministers and the running of Atlantia's technology resources. This class is strongly suggested for local group webministers, anyone who runs guild or events sites, or anyone who is interested in getting involved as a deputy to the kingdom webministers office. This meeting will not be recorded.

A slideshow lecture on the boats and ships of the Norse during the Viking era. The lecture will focus on the uses, characteristics, construction methods, tools, and materials of planked Norse boats.

This class will be a slideshow of building a Norwegian Færing using traditional construction methods. The boat was made of oak and pine planks with iron rivets. She shares many characteristics of boats from the Viking era.

One way to preserve roses or other flowers is to press them flat so they can dry. Once dry, the flowers can be mounted on heavy cardstock and framed. This method of preserving botanical specimens started in the 16th century and continues to this day. I will discuss and demonstrate how to press roses using a plant press or something similar then mounting them for framing once they are dry. I will talk about where to get the tools and supplies and my successes and failures at drying roses for display. Links to download the handouts will be emailed to the students prior to the class.
