Then I will be using a mortar and pestle to crush blue Iris flowers, squeeze the liquid from them using another piece of linen and saturate other pieces if linen that have been scoured and impregnated (thoroughly cleaned then soaked and dried) in a 10:1 solution of rock alum, Potassium aluminum sulfate. If there's time I can show how to use finished clothlets for painting with water and prepared gum Arabic

So many things are online right now and while we are medieval (or at least pre-1600ish) the tools that are offered on platforms such as Google can be a very real help to those who are trying to be efficient. Whether organizing events or research, there are lots of ways that these apps can be of use in the SCA. We will take a look at how the apps work with each other and how to use them. There will be plenty of time for questions as well! Not familiar with Google apps (such as Keep, Docs, Sheets, Jamboard, etc.,?) no problem! Magic and Workers of Magic in Ancient Rome
To understand the medieval views on magic and those who used it, it is important to understand where they sprang from. For medieval Europe it was a combination of local, pre-Christian societal norms and how the ancient Roman and Greek cultures viewed the topic. Ancient Roman views on magic were as diverse as the empire itself. From embracing Egyptian mysticism in the cult of Isis to the view that evil witches ate dead infants, all this and more existed side-by-side in Rome. This class will examine popular Roman views on magic and those who practiced it as they existed primarily in the first centuries CE, the formative years for Christianity, and will highlight those that continued to influence it for centuries afterward. At the present time I do not plan on recording the class, but if my technological skills and computer equipment improve that may change and i would of course notify the class. |

An Overview of Hundepanzer: How to Protect your Favourite Dogs from Wild Boars
Several years ago, I came across a photo of a pair of rare survivors: sets of linen dog armour used for wild boar hunting. This single photo has turned into an ongoing research project with the end goal of reconstructing one of the sets sized for my own canine companion to wear (not for hunting). Currently located in “The Art Collections of Veste Coburg”, these sets of linen dog armour date to the lifetime of Duke Casimir of Saxe-Coburg (1564- 1633), who was by all accounts an avid hunter.
Wild boar hunting was extremely dangerous, particularly for the dogs; Hundepanzer was an ingenious way to protect them. Hundepanzer are made of linen reinforced with sewn in flat metal rings; very similar to that of the eyelet body armour recommended for protecting archers by the 1590’s. In this talk I will discuss the documented history of the Hundepanzer, the dogs who wore it, and what is known about the dimensions, construction and materials of the armour. In addition, I will share my observations based on currently available photos; and outline the plan and possible pattern for a functional reconstruction of the Hundepanzer. I am open to the option of recording, but am unfamiliar with the presenter side of zoom. This class will not be recorded. |

Émail de Plique: How To Make Cloisonné Enamel Jewels
Enameling is the art of fusing glass over metal into works of art. Cloisonné is a technique in which designs are made with wires and then ground glass is placed inside the cells (cloisons) which the wires form. Many forms of medieval cloisonné start by soldering or fusing the wires to a metal backplate. Émail de Plique, instead, affixes the wires into a layer of transparent enamel. This is a simpler and faster method than soldering the wires to the backplate and when done in opaque enamels the results look identical. We will demonstrate the Émail de Plique technique as well as explain other techniques such as champlevé, plique-à-jour and basse-taille.

Let’s Get Faded: Natural Dyes and Sunlight
In 2019, when Lady Ela first began experimenting with natural dyeing, she decided that she wanted to do a colorfastness/fade test of dyes before investing in dyeing full garments. The dyes tested were weld, madder, indigo, and cochineal, alone and in combination. Never one to do things by halves, she decided to test the amount of fading for one week, one month, three months, six months, and one year (the entirety of 2020). On December 31, 2020, the experiment was complete, and… well, you’ll have to come to the class! In addition to discussing (and sharing lots of pictures of!) the process and results, Ela will use this year-long project to demonstrate how to set up, track, and analyze your own experiments. She will also discuss ways to employ natural dyes while caring for dyed goods.

Poisons and how to avoid them from antiquity to the late middle ages
Until the advent of criminal toxicology in the late 1800 poison was a very popular way of getting rid of people you didn't like, despite being criminalized both in secular law and by the tenets of Christianity. "Thou shalt not suffer a poisoner to live" was the original phrase in the Bible, until witches became a larger concern for the Church. In this class I will discuss the most popular poisons (and some of the more exotic), and the extreme methods people went to in the hopes of avoiding them... or not. They knew in the ancient world that toxicity was dose-dependent, but there are consequences for everything which aren't always immediately apparent.

Surface Couching Embroidery
Surface couching is one of the oldest and most versatile embroidery techniques known. It is found across various cultures and spans hundreds of years. This embroidery technique can be as simple as a single thread couched, or as complicated as several threads couched with multiple colors. In this class we will look at images of a few extant historical examples, along with pictures of surface couching applications within the SCA. Following the brief lecture there will be a hands-on portion where students can try out the basic technique, resulting in a finished, or mostly finished belt bag panel which can later be finished and kept, or gifted.
A few of my examples can be viewed on the embroidery pages at https://shinystitches.files.wordpress.com

The Newcomer's Roundtable: From a Newcomer's Perspective
The SCA offers a wide variety of resources for the newcomer. With all these wonderful offerings it can still be daunting to navigate the fantastic world of the SCA. Join us as we discuss the ins and outs, and ups and downs of this brave new (old) world all offered from the unique perspective of a newcomer who has been playing in the SCA for two years. Along the way we'll offer some tried and true tips for getting involved with your local group both virtually and in-person (when we're there again), how to pursue researching your area(s) of interest, where to find (or how to construct) garb, and we'll have an open discussion to answer questions and share our stories as newcomers. |

Making an Ethical Practice 3: The Necessity of Ethical Behavior
Why is it so important to follow these guidelines? Simply put: empathy. An unethical practice is an uncaring practice, and people notice.
It is impossible to maintain a positive and effective practice environment that is welcoming to all prospective members without adhering to the ethical obligations of a good practice. |

Writing a More Effective Award Recommendation
In this class, we’ll discuss the "award recommendation" genre--what it is, who reads it and how they read it, and then how to write one that, hopefully, communicates effectively what we want it to. While the award recommendation is an incredibly common genre in the SCA, it’s also a kind of writing that can, for some, feel intimidating, overwhelming, or otherwise impossible to tackle. As we learn more about the award recommendation genre, we’ll look at some hypothetical examples of recommendations and discuss how they might be improved further. Then, we’ll consider some strategies for drafting and revising more effective letters of our own.

Improving Mobility - Walking aids and prostheses in the Middle Ages
Trauma, judicial amputation, disease, or congenital disorder; there were many ways that the people of the Middle Ages could become limited or restricted in their physical mobility. A brief exploration of these mechanisms of impediment will be followed by a (roughly) chronological survey of a number of period illustrations of 'crutches' and prostheses. Replicas of some of the 'peasant' aids will be presented and discussed. Finally, the genesis of the 'modern' prosthesis will be introduced through the work of Ambroise Paré (c. 1510-1590).

"White in the Fracture" - Purifying silver for coins and jewelry
The purity of the silver used in coins and jewelry was a major concern. Especially with the coinage as the coins represented the direct authority of the king. And whether the goal was to raise the purity of silver or to correctly debase it, having it pure was the starting point. This class will examine the most common method of silver purification, cupellation. We will talk about evidence for its usage. Scientifically what the process involves. The manufacture of the cupel from period sources. And finally, a short video clip that shows the actual process as done by myself. There will be time for questions from attendees.

XXX Commedia - Not Your Mothers Commedia Class
Advanced Commedia dell' Arte research: This class will present research on historic commedia erotica and other mature content found in various commedia frescos, paintings, performance, culture, and scenarios. Entertainment 400-500 years ago had no "PG-13" ratings, so this class will discuss the material in historic Commedia that modern audiences would have rated for "mature audiences". As an instructor, I will make my best effort to start from the least vulgar/sexual/erotic and sometimes disgusting (by modern standards) topics and continue onward to the increasingly more vulgar/sexual/erotic and sometimes disgusting content, so students can leave the class at a time of their choosing if they wish. The Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba
A Mosque-Cathedral? This classification is a bit strange to wrap one's head around, despite being exactly what it sounds like. Built like a Matryoshka Doll, the center of the building is purportedly a Roman temple, then expansions upon expansions have been added on over the centuries in different styles to create a sense of authority and legitimacy through the use of architectural elements. Mainly the relevant expansions made by the Islamic rulers in the medieval period will be examined, but we'll take time to look at some other expansions briefly, too. The choice of location of the Mosque of Cordoba will also be examined. Officially the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption in Catholicism, this building has served many communities over its lifetime, and continues to be a cultural and physical landmark in Cordoba. |

Sign Language for Fighting Activities
Hand gestures have been used in sports refereeing for more than a century. I propose that rather than invent new ones, the fighting community should consider already existing signs in American Sign Language to supplement voice calls. The goal is to both improve communication on the list field where the space can be large and noisy, and to make fighting spaces more inclusive to people who are deaf or hard of hearing.
This class will teach a small number of signs in ASL specially selected for combat activities in the SCA. We will also cover variants of each sign and considerations for using them in the context of SCA martial activities. The presentation will be a small number of slides followed by a physical demonstration by the instructor. It may be useful for students to have their camera on for this class, but it is not required. No prior experience with ASL is required. This class will not be recorded. |

Traitor, Temptress, Mother: Interpretations of Dona Marina and the Fall of the Aztec Empire
Marina, also known as La Malinche, was an enslaved Nahua woman who served as interpreter and advisor to Hernan Cortes at the time of the Spanish Conquest of Central Mexico. She also gave birth to his son, Martin, one of the first Euro-indigenous mixed race people. Her short life has been the subject of constant and often conflicting reinterpretation, casting her as a traitor to her people, a victim of slavery, a sex-crazed temptress and as the mother to the Mestizos. In this class, we will evaluate what we actually know about the woman herself and her life before and after the arrival of Cortes. We will discuss the role of the Mestizo person in the post-conquest environment of Central Mexico and how modern historians place Dona Marina in the larger context of Mexican history, including nationalistic and feminist interpretations.
This class may not be appropriate for children. Potentially difficult topics discussed will include sexual assault, slavery, death of and violence against indigenous people, and descriptions of human sacrifice in a religious context. |

The care and feeding of photographers: How to get the best pictures of your event
Every good photographer in the SCA knows that the shot never trumps the moment, that they shouldn't nudge, push or do anything to draw attention to themselves or disturb others to get the picture they have envisioned. At the same time, there is value in being able to capture those moments and getting the pictures where for a second, reality falls away and you really seem to capture the Modern Middle Ages in all it's beauty and emotion.
Getting good pictures of your apprenticing, household joining, belt-accepting, wedding, arts and science display, demo, performance or even your whole event is a gift you can give others. Like a site token that you get to take home, pictures can keep the memories alive, or for some who are overwhelmed in the moment, show them details they never saw. They're not just good publicity for website and facebook, some of them become a defining memory for members or a way to join in for those who were not at the event.
If you organize anything in the SCA photos will not, and should not be your first concern. Or your second. Or your third. But there ARE things you can do to make it easier for SCA photographers to be as inobtrusive as possible AND get the best shots.
This class is not just for autocrats but for SCA families with smaller or bigger ceremonies, people in charge of activities they like to see photographed, artists who want to get better pictures of their work, households, court heralds and more. If you have an interest in how 'what you do' gets photographed, I may have some tips! |

Beyond Kells
The Book of Kells—and, for that matter, The Lindesfarne Gospels—are not the only Insular manuscripts ripe for inspiration.
Come along and explore a few beautiful, lesser-known alternatives, and learn how they can enliven, embolden, and enrich your scrollwork.
[Bran Mydwynter (pronounced Brahn) has over twenty years of professional graphic design under his belt, and over thirty years of experience with a paintbrush in his hand.
His main scribal focus is on Insular Manuscripts, and is always fascinated to explore the nexus between their taste in SCA period, our own modern taste, and our goals in creating the things we create.]

Create an online event/collegium/shindig Officially or Unofficially
Many of our SCA educational events nowadays are taking form in topical online events. They can be called Collegium, Symposia, other names referring to a pre-determined date and time when folks will gather online in the same virtual space to exchange ideas. Kingdom-Sized universities often include managing credits which often takes the input of kingdom level officers, but smaller events without credits can be created by anyone with the motivation. This class will cover the foundational steps needed to create an online learning event, some of the tools publicly available, and examples of how some groups have already achieved significant outreach and education online. The same process can be used for any online event. We will cover the differences between Official online events and Unofficial online activities. Pythagorean intonation - the math behind the music
In medieval Europe, instruments and voices were tuned using a different system than the "equal temperament" we've grown up thinking of as "in tune." While this ancient intonation tends to make the chords we're used to sound a bit "off," it makes music written during that time absolutely sparkle! When done right, Pythagorean intonation doesn't just make medieval music sound "right," it can make the performer, the audience, and the entire room vibrate along with the music.
In this course, you will learn all about this mathematically pure intonation. You'll learn how intervals are formed, how they differ from modern, equal-tempered intervals, why we've moved from Pythagorean intonation toward equal temperament, and the physics behind what makes this intonation so special. We'll be covering all of this from the ground up, so no prior knowledge of music theory is required. All are welcome! |

Dukes & Duchesses, Knights & Barons, and What on Earth is a Marquess?!
From the moment of its inception, the Society for Creative Anachronism has strived to authentically recreate the arts, sciences, combat, and courtesy of various times all long gone by. In this pursuit, a vast array of pageantry has emerged across the Known World - with a sea of royals and nobles in pointy hats presiding over it all. But have you ever stopped to think why a knight would stand before one baron and behind another? Or why a master artisan holds a higher station than someone with a coronet on their head? In this class, we will explore the social structures of surrounding the nobility of the European Medieval and Renaissance eras, its counterparts in the Society, and how the two evolved into the modern systems we have today to honor those bygone times.
