Fiore's Sword in One Hand
Fiore presented a complete combat system in 1409 which included a consistent approach including grappling, dagger, sword, spear, and mounted combat. It has application to all SCA fighting styles.
The section on fighting with a sword in one hand is one of the shortest in the manual consisting of just 13 plates. This class will, as time permits, examine each of the plates with the translated text and discuss the plays described in this section. The presentation will include slides of the plates and translation, video of some of the plays, and live demonstrations of variations. Discussion will include how to apply Fiore's techniques to SCA combat rule sets. |

Charny asks, who gets the horse?
Geoffroi de Charny wrote his “Book of Chivalry” at the behest of Jean II of France during the Hundred Years War at a time when the king wanted to improve the quality of knights. Less well known, Charny also wrote over 130 “Questions concerning the joust, tournaments and war” to explore the correct actions of men-at-arms in a variety of martial situations. The class will not cover all the questions, but it will try to reveal the general themes and problems that Charny deemed worthy of discussion, many of which involve who gets the horse when the fight is done. |

15th century Ladies Winged Cap
Head coverings were worn throughout time, and some are much more simple to make than they appear.
This class will provide an overview of the construction of a 15th century “Winged Cap,” or "Tailed Coif." Thanks to the online format, I do not plan on anyone finishing a cap in class, but will demonstrate various stages of construction so you can see how the cap comes together.
I sew this cap entirely by hand, so familiarity with hand stitching is really the only pre-req.
This cap can be seen in a few places:

White Scarf Round Table: Communication
Several WS round tables have been hosted and commonly communication is a theme.
This round table will focus on Communication with the WS specifically:
Resources ws and non-ws can use to communicate with each other and how (if needed) we can improve those methods. What communications/information are perceived as lacking and preferred methods of informing people of such. Addressing the perceived need to make/or make more visible or more approachable methods to communicate to the WS. Defining what is reasonable expectations of communication. How the WS has improved communication over the past few years and areas we could still improve.
This round table is focusing on METHODS of communications and addressing those specifically.

Manipulating the Middle Ages: Racism, Nationalism, Ethnocentrism, . and the Society
What do racism, nationalism, ethnocentrism, and misogyny have in common? It's the Middle Ages. Throughout modern history, individuals have sought to reinterpret the Middle Ages in order to justify these things and much more. How can this happen? Aren't facts just facts? Why does interpretation matter? As it so happens, popular media, politicians, and historians have throughout time repurposed, invented, and manipulated the Middle Ages by highlighting certain facts and downplaying or ignoring others.
We within the Soceity also interpret and reinterpret various elements from this period in history. It is vital to the future of the Soceity to discuss how and why we do this in contrast and comparsion to other organizations.
This class will discuss two texts in conjunction: _The Devil's Historians_ by Kaufman and Sturtevant and _Inventing the Middle Ages_ by Norman Cantor. Students need not have read these books but they will provide the framework for discussion. |

Medieval-inspired gear for backcountry camping
Recreational camping is fundamentally not appropriate for the time period covered by the SCA. Sleeping outside only became something some people in Western society did for fun in the late 19th century.
That being said, it's a lot of fun to get out in the woods in garb with only what you can carry on your back, cook over a campfire, and sleep in wool blankets under the stars. Backcountry camping in the style of a previous time period has long been popular with those portraying 19th century Mountain men and 18th century longhunters, but those interested in earlier periods are beginning to give it a try, as well!
This course will discuss ideas for putting together camping gear based on extant artifacts and medieval representations of hunters, pilgrims, and soldiers. The handout that accompanies this class can be found here (https://drive.google.com/file/d/16o2WxmYzPvdb9WOp5O0GYT1xjLJIguAB/view?usp=sharing); it focuses primarily on artifacts and artwork from Europe in the 10th - 15th centuries (as will the class), but some earlier and later pieces are discussed, and the structure suggested can be applied to kits based on many different time periods and cultures. In class, I will summarize the concepts discussed in the handout and talk a little about some of my personal preferences for medieval-inspired gear, as well as facilitate student questions and discussion.

Her Best Bonnet and Gown: Evolution of Early Tudor Women's Dress on Church Monuments
Early Tudor costume histories usually reference Holbein's depictions of the court of Henry VIII, but the Tudors claimed the throne almost forty years before Holbein set foot in England. Without the products of a prolific portrait painter or an active local industry in illuminated manuscripts, how can we learn what English women considered fashionable in 1485, 1500, or 1520? By studying what depictions they did commission: life size alabaster, stone, and wooden effigies to adorn their tombs in churches across the country.
This class will examine over 100 monuments, classifying bonnets and gowns into different types and then trying to establish patterns in which hats went with which dresses during which broad and often overlapping periods of time. Our primary focus will be 1485-1558 although photographs of some earlier and later monuments will be included.
The class will be broken into two roughly one hour sections: first a lecture, richly populated with hundreds of photographs taken by the teacher, and then another hour for an in-depth question and answer period in which we can return to the photographs, giving everyone a chance to look more closely and ask questions about the diverse fashions depicted on early sixteenth century English church monuments. In order to encourage student discussion this class will not be recorded. |

Renaissance Knife Fight: Bolognese Dagger of Achille Marozzo
Historical dagger is largely associated with either rondel ice-pick fights and grappling or being a parrying companion with a rapier. In Marozzo, however, we see a dagger system containing cuts, slices, and close-in trapping which appears to set itself apart in approach from most other historical dagger sources. In this class we will study the offline footwork of the Bolognese system along with some basic guard, cut, and thrust nomenclature. We will then work through the chapters of Marozzo's dagger vs dagger combat. At the end students should know the basics of Marozzo's dagger system and should begin to understand the role of both the attacks with the dagger and some basic prese (grappling) of the Bolognese system.
A dagger simulator, dowel or some other trainer is recommended for this course.

Translating ancient texts to build performance pieces
Lanea will teach the most awkward and frustrating thing she can: the process of creating a literal English translation of an ancient text, and then rewriting that translation into poetic English for use as a performance piece. Our exemplar is a 9th C Irish tale about the lucky man who owned both the best hound and the best pig that ever were, and how his richness led to anarchy and mayhem. We will discuss dealing with declensions, outmoded prose and poetic forms, seeking poetic brevity and power, and understanding the cultural shifts between the original audience and the one you would like to reach with your translations. Figuratively speaking, we will make a great feast from a dead boar and a funny story from a murderous grudge match, and we'll laugh while it happens. |

Living with the Dead: An Introduction to Death in the Andes
This class will introduce the Deathways of three late era Andean Cultures, the Chachapoyas, the Chimu, and the Inca, as well as the cultural clash resulting from these practices when the Spanish invaded.
Death in the Andes is not the same Death with which we are acquainted. Even today the Quechua word for dead people, wanuq, is a progressive or continuous word that means those who are dying or in the process of death. In most of the Andean region, mummification can happen naturally, and often has. Likely due to this natural preservation of the body and a focus on collective, supportive, and reciprocal societies, you start to see the logic that ruled the Andean Deathways, and the interesting ways that played out in different cultures. The three cultures covered in this class lasted at least until the mid 1400s, had at least a few hundred years of history, and range from the Amazonian Cloud Forest, to the Coastal Desert, to the Highland Tundra. |

I will demonstrate the process using basic gardening tools, discuss some different approaches, and what has worked for me and what has failed.
There will also be an Roses: Open Q&A session as a separate class later in the day.
Links to download the class handouts will be emailed to students prior to the class. Class will be offered via Zoom and will be recorded. |

The Life of Aquinas
Thomas Aquinas (1225 – 1274) was arguably the most influential philosopher and theologian of the European Middle Ages. His considerable volume of works fused together Aristotelian philosophy and Catholic theology into an original synthesis that has influenced thinkers down into the modern era. This class however will not be about philosophy as such, instead we will look at Aquinas as an archetype of the medieval scholar. He lived and thrived in the early era of the medieval universities, as well as being an early member of the Dominican mendicant order. Consequently, we will focus on those aspects of his biography relevant to development of a persona who moved in the intellectual circles of the High Middle Ages. |

European Haiku?
Haiku only needs a small number of syllables...
Many of the Medieval Welsh poetry forms are almost the same!
If you can count, and rhyme, you can write period poetry. A poem can be as short as
three lines. Yes, even you can write in a Period Welsh Poetry style.
The Welsh were prolific composers of Poetry in the 7th-13th centuries. There were 24 codified verse forms broken into 3 larger areas. In here we'll look into some of the Englynion and Awld verse forms. Particularly earlier examples before the Cynghanedd became required.
Also, tune in to learn why writing Welsh Poetry using English *IS* a period practice.

Iron Age Orkney: Building a Regional Specific Celtic Persona
In this class, I will share my approach to creating a regional specific Celtic kit for a time and place without a lot of precedence or presence in the SCA: Iron Age Orkney. This discussion will include how I selected my time and location, how I filled in gaps in the archaeological record, and some ways that I try to take my kit from "Early Period Celtic" to "Iron Age Orcadian."
Orkney is an island cluster north of mainland Scotland in the North Sea, and has a rich cultural history from the Neolithic to today. If you like Scotland, standing stones, Vikings, sea exploration, the Picts, cool jewelry, unique dwellings, PUFFINS, seafood, Disney's Brave, and fringed fashion accessories, please join us! Psycho Horses!: A case study of the British Library’s Psychomachia
In the British Library there is a 10thc illuminated manuscript of the Psychomachia, a poem of almost 1000 lines by the 5thc Roman poet Prudentius. The Psychomachia is describes the challenges of vices and virtues for the human soul in a battle style.
This manuscript has very interesting illuminations of horse barding that I have yet to see anywhere else and want to examine closer — with you!— as I contemplate recreating it for an eventual persona pentathlon.

Roman Mosaics: the Rules
Have you ever wondered why there is a line of white tesserae (mosaic tiles) around the outside of figures in a Roman mosaics? There is a very specific reason for this and it's just one part of what you will learn in this class. There are eight "Rules" -- guidelines how to set the tesserae -- that were used by the ancient craftsmen. If you don't know them then you won't see them, but they are essential to be able to refer to a mosaic as "Roman". There are no Rules in modern mosaics work, and it's only by intensive study of the remains from the Roman Empire that Classical Mosaicists have been able to discern them. This class will introduce you to the eight Rules so that you can recognize them yourself. Note: this is a discussion class, not hands on crafting. This class will NOT be recorded. |

How To Organize an Online Collegium/Symposium/Shindig (small university event).
Many of our SCA educational events nowadays are taking form in topical online events. They can be called “Collegium”, “Symposia”, other names referring to a pre-determined date and time when folks will gather online in the same virtual space to exchange ideas. Kingdom-Sized universities often include managing “credits” which often takes the input of kingdom level officers, but smaller events without credits can be created by anyone with the motivation. This class will cover the foundational steps needed to create an online learning event, some of the tools publicly available, and examples of how some groups have already achieved significant outreach and education online. |

Fighting at night: How low light changes you, and how to fight and marshal your best in it
Ever fight a night-time practice or a torchlight tourney and wonder why things work differently, but you can't quite put your finger on it? The short answer is that fight dynamics are actually heavily affected by low light and there are many subtle factors that a smart fighter uses to counteract the limitations of it.
Don Julien de la Fontaine will teach this class on the underlying biology and MANY considerations of low light training, fighting, and marshaling for all fighting disciplines.
Beyond his SCA fighting experience, Julien will leverage his experience in night combat operations in the US Military to help inform this class. |

Surface Couching Embroidery
Surface couching is one of the oldest and most versatile embroidery techniques known. It is found across various cultures and spans hundreds of years. This embroidery technique can be as simple as a single thread couched, or as complicated as several threads couched with multiple colors. In this class we will look at images of a few extant historical examples, along with pictures of surface couching applications within the SCA. Following the brief lecture there will be a hands-on portion where students can try out the basic technique, resulting in a finished, or mostly finished Christmas ornament which can be kept, or gifted.

Brandubh - Irish Hnefatafl
This is an introduction to the Irish form of Hnefatafl, a board game popular throughout Northern Europe in Viking times. Brandubh is the smallest form of Hnefatafl to survive; it is played on a board with 7x7 cells; with a "Branan" (Hnefa/King), his four companions, and eight attackers. Games are short and fast, with roughly equal chances for the Branan to escape, or to be captured by his foes. This workshop incorporates new research; new documentary, archaelogical, and interpretive evidence. Four Brandubh boards have been found in Scotland as well. The class will begin with a quick historical overview, then a demonstration game or two; then Q&A and coaching as students play on their own. This class will not be recorded. |

Imitation as a Path to More Authentic Original Poetry/Song
One of the more difficult skill sets to cultivate in the SCA as a poet (or songwriter, or storyteller, or...) is an 'authentic' voice through which to channel one's ideas--a voice that sounds like it fits in to a particular time and place, not just in terms of meter or structure but also philosophical outlook, turn of phrase, and general language/syntax.
So how does one even begin to move in this direction?
In this class, we'll talk through some strategies to familiarize ourselves with...
1. the poetic qualities we're trying to imitate (and how to recognize what those qualities are so that we can do so),
2. the kinds of practices we're trying to imitate (and what that might mean re: writing for SCA audiences vs. medieval audiences), and
3. awareness of the motivations we may have in doing so (and how that can help us better cultivate these skills).
Bring your interests and questions, and hopefully we can have a fantastic conversation that gives everyone involved some new ideas & directions to pursue!

Braid of the Perniö Headpiece
The Perniö headpiece ca. 1150 is comprised of an 8 strand braid and bronze coils. The original and reconstruction are on display in the National Museum of Finland.
In this class you get to learn from my braiding struggles. You will learn how to construct the braid, and see the design of a tool I've engineered to make this braiding easy-peasy.
This will be a live class on the Google Meet platform, and also recorded for future reference.
If you wish to participate in the braiding
portion please have 4x 1 yard long strands of yarn; any fiber type will work for learning but the thicker yarn is easier to use and see. Also, 1x 12 inch piece of yarn and something stationary to tie on to (c-clamp, table leg, safety pin to your pants, lamp... Almost anything will work). |

Dukes & Duchesses, Knights & Barons, and What on Earth is a Marquess?!
From the moment of its inception, the Society for Creative Anachronism has strived to authentically recreate the arts, sciences, combat, and courtesy of various times all long gone by. In this pursuit, a vast array of pageantry has emerged across the Known World - with a sea of royals and nobles in pointy hats presiding over it all. But have you ever stopped to think why a knight would stand before one baron and behind another? Or why a master artisan holds a higher station than someone with a coronet on their head? In this class, we will explore the social structures of surrounding the nobility of the European Medieval and Renaissance eras, its counterparts in the Society, and how the two evolved into the modern systems we have today to honor those bygone times. |

Modes and Motifs: a Medieval Songwriter's Toolkit
This is a class for bards and composers who would like to write original music in a medieval style. In the Middle Ages, composers played by a slightly different set of rules, but their music still resonates with listeners today. In this class, we'll take a look at those rules and how to apply them to come up with beautiful, medieval-sounding melodies of our own.
This course will cover common scales (modes) and melodic riffs from the Middle Ages that you can use to write melodies that sound medieval, rather than modern. Time permitting, we can also cover additional topics, such as medieval approaches to accompaniment and tuning. We will talk about some basic music theory concepts, but no prior knowledge of music theory is required, and you need not be able to read music to participate. |

This class explores tips and tricks for the branch MOAS officer (and discipline-specific deputies) to get people engaged in their groups and disciplines, during and after the pandemic. For example, how to organize A&S activities in a virtual environment, how to get creative with virtual A&S gathers; and how to deal with the pros and cons of our virtual Society, and find our way back to the SCA IRL. |
