Yde and Olive: A Romance of Transgression
The main hero of this 13th century French epic, Yde, is on a journey of self-discovery and self-actualization, becoming a knight, fighting in battles, and winning the hand of the beautiful princess Olive. There is just one problem: Yde is a woman. She ran away from home disguised as a man, going from being a princess to being married to one. Though long ignored by scholars who favored other texts in the cycle to which it belongs, dismissing it as an inferior sequel to its much more famous predecessor, Huon de Bordeaux, the text began to garner more interest in the early 2000s. However, the lack of a reliable edition and a translation into Modern English could account for its exclusion from much of the scholarship. In my presentation, I will be discussing my own translation of the Old French text into Modern English, my process of editing and translating the poem, the genre to which the poem belongs, and the main themes.

Making a Cranach Goldhaube
Learn how to put together a fancy gold hat (goldhaube) similar to those found in Lucas Cranach paintings of the early 16th century. The pattern for the class was created by Mistress Genoveva von Lubeck and is found on her website: http://germanrenaissance.net/german-goldhaube-cap-of-silk-gold-and-pearls-pattern-instructions-documentation-and-notes/ However, seeing a pattern and being able to figure out all the bits are two different things. I'll walk you through all the pieces of the goldhaube and offer modification notes. I recommend that you draft a pattern based on Genoveva's diagram on her website and come to class with all the pieces cut and ready to pin together. You'll want to make a practice goldhaube before spending the time embroidering or couching down pearls on expensive silk. This is the class that will help you make a test goldhaube which you can use as the basis for a real goldhaube. This class will not be recorded. Here is link to a pre-recorded version of this class on YouTube as a backup in case of technical difficulties on the day of University. https://youtu.be/2gUaW8Lcm9A
All of Lucas Cranach's portraits can be viewed at the Lucas Cranach Digital Archive. Go there to look for inspiration. https://lucascranach.org/gallery Use the search term "Judith" to narrow down the amount of portraits with goldhaube in them. Materials you'll need to make a test goldhaube: 1 yard of scrap silk 1 yard of scrap linen for lining 4 lengths of cording, each at least 32" long (I used old ribbon and cording for my test.) |

Dukes & Duchesses, Knights & Barons, and What on Earth is a Marquess?!
From the moment of its inception, the Society for Creative Anachronism has strived to authentically recreate the arts, sciences, combat, and courtesy of various times all long gone by. In this pursuit, a vast array of pageantry has emerged across the Known World - with a sea of royals and nobles in pointy hats presiding over it all. But have you ever stopped to think why a knight would stand before one baron and behind another? Or why a master artisan holds a higher station than someone with a coronet on their head? In this class, we will explore the social structures of surrounding the nobility of the European Medieval and Renaissance eras, its counterparts in the Society, and how the two evolved into the modern systems we have today to honor those bygone times.
This class will be recorded. |

Bardic 102: Upping your game
You've performed at some bardic circles and competitions. Maybe you've written a few pieces. Maybe you dabble on some instruments. Let's talk about upping your game. Let's talk about adapting period work for modern audiences. Let's talk about stage presence. Let's talk about all kinds of little tricks, tips, and challenges to improve and hone your performances. Your instructor (Efenwealt) has been performing in the SCA for over 30 years. His work, recordings, and performances are known throughout the Knowne Worlde and he is widely recognized by other bards as someone who knows what he is doing (and for being extremely humble about it too!) The emphasis of the class will be on musical performance, since that is Efenwealt's specialty. I do not plan to record this class. |

Beyond the Blog--New Ways to Publish Your Work
How can we in the Society find new ways of sharing information and reaching people who might be interested in joining our ranks? There are a number of ways, from blog posts to Compleat Anachronist issues, but have you ever thought of taking advantage of the opportunity to publish through indie publishing resources? I am a mundane indie publisher, and would like to share some ways of packaging and presenting information, both "how to'" pamphlets, as well as SCA memoir and philosophy. Such publications would be an opportunity for persons pursuing expertise in a variety of areas in the SCA, who have the desire to find another avenue to sharing that expertise or their experiences in the SCA. In addition, the outside-the-Society reach of indie publishing could put your information in front of historical/fantasy writers and other audiences who might not have heard of the SCA. If you have an idea--or would like to throw around some ideas, this is the class to start the journey! |

Fiore's Sword in Armor - Halfswording for fun and profit
Fiore published a complete combat system in 1409 that covered grapping, dagger, swords, batons, pikes, spears, and mounted combat. This class will cover his section on fighting an opponent in armor which focuses on gripping your own sword on its blade and grip (half-swording) in order to improve targeting and leverage to exploit joints and gaps in the armor. The discussion will focus on the art as described by the master and then discuss how moves can be adapted for SCA combat rule sets. The instructor has had success in applying these techniques to SCA cut and thrust. |

Fire may no longer be the everyday necessity it once was, but studying and practicing period fire making methods can be an immersive (and fun!) way to learn more about those whose lives depended on it. In this class, I will discuss some documentable materials and techniques used in fire making prior to 1600 CE and demonstrate the initial steps of starting a fire with flint and steel (a fire making method appropriate for many personas). This class will be recorded and the recording will be made available to students.

Junk Foods: Archeological Dumpster Diving
When it comes to food research we aren’t limited by the written recipe texts, but we can learn a lot from what people left behind in their trash, in their latrines, and in their bones.
The focus of this class is a basic overview of looking at archeological finds: middens, cesspits, human remains, in particular. I’m approaching this as someone who is NOT formally trained in archeology, but how we can use the research published by those who are to further our knowledge of the diets of people living in the medieval and early modern time periods and how we can apply this creatively to our SCA re-creations.

Create an online event/collegium/shindig Officially or Unofficially
Many of our SCA educational events nowadays are taking form in topical online events. They can be called ?Collegium?, ?Symposia?, other names referring to a pre-determined date and time when folks will gather online in the same virtual space to exchange ideas. Kingdom-Sized universities often include managing ?credits? which often takes the input of kingdom level officers, but smaller events without credits can be created by anyone with the motivation. This class will cover the foundational steps needed to create an online learning event, some of the tools publicly available, and examples of how some groups have already achieved significant outreach and education online. The same process can be used for any online event. We will cover the differences between Official online events and Unofficial online activities. Advanced Commedia dell' Arte research: This class will present research on historic commedia erotica and other mature content found in various commedia frescos, paintings, performance, culture, and scenarios. As an instructor, I will make my best effort to start from the least vulgar/sexual/erotic and sometimes disgusting (by modern standards) topics and continue onward to the increasingly more vulgar/sexual/erotic and sometimes disgusting content, so students can leave the class at a time of their choosing if they wish. Fabliaux
This class is for the poets/poetry enthusiasts among you who would like to investigate the funny, seedier, ?saltier? side of medieval poetry-the fabliaux. These are the "dirty" French poems that amused one and all with their deft turn of phrase and wordplay. Though the jongleurs, who were credited most with this form, did not pen the ditty that begins, "There once was a man from Nantucket," because that is altogether too tame for a fabliau, they did produce some very creative and even awe-inspiring poetry whose subject matter is not for the faint of heart or young of age. The class will delve into the forms, themes, and comparisons of the French form to the similar "racy" forms found in other languages and cultures. Please note: this class will not be recorded. |

After giving a brief history of the gittern, Renaissance Guitar, Madeiran rajao, and Hawaiian ukulele, the instructor will show the class some basic chords and strums, and introduce at least three songs: one Medieval, one Renaissance, and one "Filk". Students can tune their ukuleles, and strum and sing along remotely. Song sheets and chord diagrams will be available via link. This class will not be recorded. As this class is being offered for a second time, some of the songs (but not all) will differ from those taught in the last University session.
Many people don't realize that the ukulele has roots in Medieval and Renaissance Europe - it is an appropriate instrument for accompanying SCA song. This course should help aspiring ukulelists to get started! |

Maestra Suzanne de la Ferté is the new Society Sign Herald deputy to Laurel Queen of Arms (as of December 2020). For those who do not know me, I reside in Atlantia, in the Canton of Charlesbury Crossing which is within the Barony of Sacred Stone (Marshville, North Carolina - just southeast of Charlotte). I moved to Atlantia this past November to join a wonderful local IT consulting firm. As a CODA (Child of Deaf Adults), I have been signing all my life, over 50 years, and was a professional interpreter for the deaf for several years after graduating from school. My grandparents, parents, and siblings are all Deaf. My husband, HL Angus de Botha, lost his hearing due to his military service. I have been doing sign heraldry and heraldic art for my entire SCA career (just shy of 25 years). I started out as Ansteorra 's first Silent Herald, then went on to be Calontir's first GoodHand Herald (kingdom sign herald). I continued silent heralding when we moved to Northshield and am now a sign/silent herald for the Kingdom of Atlantia. I am easiest to reach by email or Facebook messenger. |

Dragon's brain, dragon's spittle - the exquisite fragrances of China's Song Dynasty
The art of incense compounding reached its height during Song Dynasty. The influences of Indian states and Islamic caliphates' perfumery traditions were blended with Chinese aesthetics to create the most unique scents in Chinese history. No wonder that at least two emperors of Song were accused of spending more time on compounding new incense blends than on governing. It was also a period when incense compounding split into the art pursued by aristocracy and cheap blends became accessible for the less affluent populace. We will discuss ingredients and their origins, the extant recipe sources and dissect a few recipes, showing the variety of fragrances available during this period. This class will not be recorded. |

Modern Music Notation
An overview of the basic concepts of modern music notation. Students will learn to haltingly, but accurately, decode unfamiliar music. We will use electronic keyboards or keyboard apps to explore modern transcriptions of SCA period music. Examples will come from a time period ranging from the Middle Ages to "fashionably late" Early Stuart England. The focus of this class is hands-on practice of basic note-reading skills. I do not plan to record this class.
Students will need access to an electronic keyboard, piano, or keyboard app on a device with a large enough screen to allow easy interaction with the virtual keyboard. They will need to download and print the class handout before the start of class. |

Dancing with Vocabulary: A review of the words we mumble through
Vocabulary can be overlooked compared to the excitement of dance. While dancing is fun, having a good base of vocabulary terms and how to perform them is valuable. Picking up new dances faster to understand regional variations, all require a good base. Through this class I hope to teach or refresh the basic vocabulary terms needed for English Country, Italian, and a few Gresly.

A Roman Soldier's Diet
Napoleon once said, "An army marches on its stomach". However it is likely that he read the phrase in Ars Militaris by the Roman writer Vegetius, who most likely learned it from the Greeks. Since the beginning of warfare, the issue of how to feed a large standing army has been one of the largest logistics problems to be faced, and the Roman army was no exception. Learn what kinds of foods a Roman soldier marched with, and about the 6000+ calories he ate in a normal day. Samples of food will be displayed, and recipes provided. NOT recorded. |

Teaching the Teachers: 2 Levels of Constraining the Blade
This course will review the two "levels" of blade control, called variously stringere, counterguard, finding, gaining, domination, and shutting out by period masters. The goal is to share observations about the instruction of new fighters relating to these concepts, and suggest more effective language and paradigm for instruction to avoid having to "un-teach" some common errors later in the fighter's career. A outline of notes will be provided. The class will be recorded given consent of all students. |

The Life of Peter Abelard -- Sex, Violence, Philosophy!
Peter Abelard lived from c.1079-1142, and may rightly be called The Most Interesting Man of the 12th Century. He has been remembered by many for his scandalous love affair with Heloise d'Argenteuil, but he was also one of his generation's most preeminent philosophers and theologians. While having some fun with the, ahem, more salacious aspects of his life, this class will also look at why he is an important figure in the transition into the intellectual life of the High Middle Ages. For anyone building a persona around the scribal, literary, or scholarly arts, knowledge of Abelard and the circles in which he roamed and left his mark are essential. This class will be offered via Zoom and recorded for later viewing. |

Your First SCA War
When we finally start in-person SCA events again, we can look forward to events much bigger than a local one-day gathering -- from 1,000 to 10,000 attendees! How does one survive there for four to 14 days? Let's look beyond the packing list to address questions such as; how to find a group to camp with, basic camp etiquette, what you can and cannot buy once you get there, etc. Much information is Pennsic-specific, but we'll try to mention the general rules for other large events such as Gulf Wars, Ruby Joust, and War of the Wings. Class will not be recorded.

European Haiku?
The Welsh were prolific composers of Poetry in the 7th-13th centuries. There were 24 codified verse forms broken into 3 larger areas. In here we'll look into some of the Englynion and Awld verse forms. Particularly earlier examples before the Cynghanedd became required. Haiku only needs a small number of syllables... Many of the Medieval Welsh poetry forms are almost the same! If you can count, and rhyme, you can write period poetry. A poem can be as short as three lines. Yes, even you can write in a Period Welsh Poetry style. Also, tune in to learn why writing Welsh Poetry using English *IS* a period practice. This class will be interactive. Defining Your Personal SCA Journey
My name is Master Raven Mayne and I have been a member of the SCA since ~1996. In this class are a few of my observations and philosophies that I gained from my experiences on my SCA path. My hope in writing this, is to show a perspective that may shed a light on a well-traveled road. *All my class handouts are organic in a effort to improve them as time move on. This version may include subjects of a goal of SCA Peerage. There is so much that goes into a persons individual path that there is no one way, or combination of things, that is the manual to lead directly to sucess. You have to put all the time and effort into working toward goals that sometimes you feel like "What else can I do?" Well in this handout are things to consider and think about along the way.

We will discuss the appropriate wording, lettering, how to prevent forgery and tampering, and seal application that make a document legally binding. Students will receive a PowerPoint document with examples from the period. Speak the Speech: Analyzing Shakespearean Text for Performance
"Speak the speech, I pray you, as I pronounced it to you, trippingly on the tongue... but if you mouth it, as many of our players do, I would as lief the town crier spoke your lines!" How does one go from oddly arranged text printed in an archaic font on a folio-sized page to proclaiming meaning and intent? We will explore this question, looking at scansion, rhetoric, and phrasing, and how they can be used to bring Shakespearean (and other period) texts to life. We'll also look at how to draw on the closest thing to primary sources we have - the quartos produced during Shakespeare's life and the FIrst Folio printed after his death - and use the clues in those documents to inform performance. This class will be part-lecture and discussion, part-participation. Participants will be asked to bring a selection of 6 lines of Shakespearean verse to class - more details to follow by email closer to classtime. Depending on class size, we may not be able work with everyone - but please be prepared to work. All experience levels welcome! Class should run approximately an hour and a half, depending on class size. This class will be recorded, but the recording will be kept only for student and instructor use. |

Making Scala's Commedia Scenarios Playable to Modern Sensibilities
Advanced Commedia: Flaminio Scala's 1611 collection of 40 Commedia dell'Arte comedies, and 10 pastorals in "Il Teatro Delle Favole Rapprestative" are fun and brilliant plays most likely performed in 1589 at a Medici wedding, as recalled by Scala 22 years later. Most audiences will be uneasy with performances of these plays for various reasons, and there are other flaws in Scala's version of these scenarios. This class looks at reasonable changes and the rationale for them that make them playable, and yet still essentially Scala's play. 30 Minute lecture followed by Q&A and group discussion.

Students will need to obtain enough string (yarn, crotchet thread, perle cotton are all good choices) to make four loops as big as their wingspan. Contact the instructor if you have any questions.

Scribe Like a Graphic Designer
Basic design principles---which they used!---that you can apply in your own scrollwork. ********* Modern graphic designers have various techniques to ensure their designs are clear, communicate what they intend, and serve their needed function. But few of these techniques are modern. Scribes and illuminators in our period may not have thought about them in the same terms, but they certainly employed them. Come along and learn a handful of basic design principles, see period examples, and learn to see where period creators made choices that our modern eyes also appreciate. Regardless whether you are reproducing existing pages or interpreting a style to create something new, weaving these techniques into your design will help you produce effective and beautiful scrollwork. (This class will not be recorded.)

Bran Mydwynter has over twenty years of professional graphic design under his belt, and over thirty years of experience with a paintbrush in his hand. His main scribal focus is on Insular Manuscripts, and is always fascinated to explore the nexus between their taste in SCA period, our own modern taste, and our goals in creating the things we create. No Fit Instrument- The Bagpipe Pre-1600
"The bagpipes," writes 16th-century Italian commentator Giovanni Della Casa in 1558, "are not an instrument for women, and indeed, are equally unsuitable for men." Love them or hate them, the bagpipes have always been with us across cultures, continents, and millennia. But there is much more to the bagpiping world than the highland greatpipes with which we are all familiar. This course seeks to familiarize students with the history of the bagpipes from Ancient Rome to 1600, differentiate the various types of bagpipes played in period, explore how pre-1600 bagpipes have been depicted in pop culture, as well as provide a basic grounding for those who might be interested in learning to play the instrument. Modal Rhythm and Notation of Early Polyphony
Learn to read medieval music! During the emergence of Western polyphony, notated music began to incorporate more than one melody sung at the same time. These pieces included the stunning works of the Notre Dame school, with elaborate virtuoso singing decoratingfamiliar lines of chant, as well as motets combining popular secular songs into duets, trios, and quartets that exposed nuances of meaning by combining texts. The fact is, though, when you have more than one melody that you need to fit together, rhythm and timing become kind of important. In this class, we will cover the earliestmethods of notating rhythmically clear, multi-part notation, and find out how to turn this (https://twitter.com/NotationIsGreat/status/1201054481263267841/photo/1) into this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KA6oq_UYbyA). Intro to Early Medieval Leather Tooling
This class is an introduction to the tools, techniques, and motifs used in decoration of leather knife and seax sheathes from the 8th-11th centuries CE. Using historical examples from Anglo-Scandinavian York, Dublin, and London, we will look at how the designs are composed and break down the individual motifs. I'll go over the basics of tool-handling and discuss how to execute these designs using simple tools - or even common household objects.
No prior experience with leatherwork is necessary. If you'd like to experiment during the class, you'll need some scraps of vegetable-tanned leather and a blunt-pointed tool like a knitting needle.

The Origin and Evolution of the Chivalric Ideal: Chivalric Virtue and the "Code of Chivalry"
Chivalry is not an institution which made a sudden and specific appearance in history and it would be fruitless to search for the place of its birth or for the name of its founder as it was neither promulgated by a Pope nor decreed by a Sovereign. While the delivery of arms, i.e. coming of age and joining of the war band, is very Germanic in origin, the knight was to inherit the lands of the magnate of the Roman World, the political power of the Praetorian Guard and the horsemanship of the "equesto ordo" or Milles of the Republic; however, it was Charlemagne's professional soldiers who would become the bridge between antiquity's Milles and Germanic warrior elite and the first knights. From the 9th through 16th Century, the knight would become a chivalric warrior defined by age, place, a sense of virtue and a sense of duty, e.g. a knight was a Christian Warrior fighting the Saracens like Lull, a servant of his king like Charny and a courtier (i.e. a standard of nobility by example) like Castiglione. We will look at period treatises on the topic of Chivalry from the anonymous Ordene de Chivalerie and texts by Raoul de Hodenc, Raymond Lull, Alfonso X the Learned of Castile, Geoffroi de Charny and Baldasare Castiglione as well as period literature and modern academic writings including texts from Keen and Barber. Mensural Notation
Learn to read medieval and renaissance music! As polyphony and multi-part music became more widespread and complex, people needed to find ways to notate it really clearly. Scribes began to use the shapes of notes to differentiate note length, and to find ways of clearly marking the time signature of pieces. At long last, notated music starts to tell us up front what we really need to know! In this class, we'll look at how to read the notation systems in use by medieval and renaissance composers such as Guillaume Dufay, Guillaume du Machaut, Philip di Vitry, Oswald von Wolkenstein, Josquin de Perez, William Byrd, and many more. Familiarity with modern music notation will be of great help to students in this class, but all are welcome! |

Using Science, Making Art: Organizing A&S in the Pandemic and Beyond
In March of 2020, the Shire of Roxbury Mill?s A&S ?Horde? (MoAS and deputies) quickly and successfully transitioned our weekly in-person A&S meetings into a virtual activity. While organizing and running A&S in a virtual environment can be a challenge, our team discovered tactics and techniques that make it as equally rewarding as in-person A&S. In this class, Lady Ealawynn Maeru (Ela), Lady Korrin Valravn, and Lady Lucy of Wigan will discuss how to create a team, plan classes, and create a sustainable A&S schedule. In particular, we will discuss how to analyze your local group?s wants, needs, demands, and abilities in order to find the A&S plan that works best for your group. We will also touch on technological demands, issues, and concerns. While this class will focus on planning during the pandemic, many of our methods were developed pre-pandemic and thus will be useful even in the eventual aftertimes!
Many of you asked for our slides. You can view a PDF of the slides directly here (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1B1vhDBAwKNvJRL7mjlcUEgmeXs9xEULX/view?usp=sharing). The slides will also be permanently linked from Ela's website (http://sca.unspunworld.com/classes/). |

As The Wheel Turns: Imported Pottery in Britain and Scandinavia
Many examples of pottery found in Anglo-Saxon and Norse graves were not locally produced. Where did they come from, how did they get there, and who made them? This class will be an introductory overview of imported pottery in Britain and Scandinavia from the 6th-10th centuries C.E., looking primarily at Frankish and Slavic wares, and will discuss the shapes, decorations, and techniques used to produce these vessels.
I don't plan to record the class, but a transcript and a PDF of the slides will be available online afterward.
